Fasting

Fasting is abstaining from food and other comforts and refreshments for the sake of self-humbling. It is done in times of sorrow (God's design – so the feeling of emptiness drives you to God. Substituting food or some other comfort cheapens the suffering and insults God, and is the pride of self-sufficiency) and intensive prayer (especially when making a very important request). The combination of both is times of repentance. Fasting in times of sorrow cooperates with what God is doing with the sorrow, and fasting in prayer expresses earnestness and dependence.
